Questions: Telling my Spiritual Stories

Telling my spiritual stories… For each of the following Gospel questions think through your personal story as tohowyoudiscovered its reality.  In other words, what is the story (process your wounds as well as the epiphanies) of how God convinced you of each conclusion’s validity in the tangible, sweaty, nitty-gritty of life.  (note: you may not […]

Life of Faith in Post-Christian Culture

Here is an audio link from a lecture I recently gave on communicating and living within Post-Christian culture as a follower ofJesus. The thoughts here flow from my recent Doctoral studies on Post-Christian culture and our ever integrating life in Portland’s inner-Eastside.

Survival Scripts

I met two men on the streets of downtown Portland tonight. I met the first man as my wife and I had just left the Mission Theater. We were walking down Glisan street, looking for a light-rail station. He was remarkably unsurprising, at least for that time of night in that part of town. He […]

Not Joking Around

There is an old joke. It goes like this: A group of friends are hiking through the woods. They come upon a bear a ways up the path. The bear starts to charge and all the friends turn to run; all of them that is, except one.

DO SMALL: A Short Feature on a Parish Orientation

The organizing principle is a geographically based ecclesiology. It is a pressing passion that the hope of the mission of Jesus Christ may very much be found in getting a “smaller” vision: a clearly defined neighborhood, a walking-world, a parish. The fact of the matter is: a mission that is too large (“we want to […]

Losing the “right” to judge

His clothes were disheveled and looked like he had had not changed in several days. Even though he weaved slightly as he walked, I […]

Jesus Dojo, Week Two

Here are a couple of the documents from our Week Two session. The first is called “Synthesizing Chart”.  This is an handout to help you organize your study of one of the Gospels.  Remember, your goal is to make an thoughtful list of the “attributes of one who follows the Jesus-Way.”  This list will include: […]

Entering the Jesus Dojo

We are trying something that is, quite frankly, a little risky. The Myers family and the Kriz family have committed to an experiment in the Jesus-way. It is action-based, communal spiritual formation. The Jesus Dojo was pioneered in San Francisco by my old friend Mark Scandrette and the folks of ReIMAGINE.

Dr. John Perkins Visits Reed College

One of my living heroes is Dr. John Perkins. The first time that I ever had a chance to be with this contemporary saint was many years ago, when he graciously accepted our invitation to speak to the students at Reed College. The following video tells just a bit of that beautiful story.
